No fewer than thirteen individuals killed and 98 hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” stated the national leader.

The president announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose term concluded the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in public projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked significant concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an urgent suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."

In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in full accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
