EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States
The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
